What is your preferred style of garden
I admire gardens that are stylish, that fit in with the local landscape-including the buildings- and
of course gardens that the owners and users of the garden enjoy. I don't like gardens that are
'boring' and predictable. Since arriving in Australia over 16 years ago I have been impressed with
the great range of plants that grow here despite the sometimes very harsh Mediterranean
climate. The 'outdoor room' is a reality that can, and should be, embraced by everyone.
Comfortable chairs and cool drinks should be just as essential as a decent pair of secateurs for
the serious and not so serious gardener. Low maintenance gardens are a must. The range of
materials and products that can be used in the garden together with the incredible range
of plants allows a fantastic opportunity to create great looking and relaxing gardens- that is my
preferred style of garden.

Can we do the work ourselves or get someone to do it?
Drawings and specifications can be drawn up that allow you to tackle some of the jobs if you
desire and have the skills. Landscaping contractors, including AKL, will also be able to
quote for jobs.

Do we have to get all of the garden done or just parts?
For new houses you probably want to get all of the garden done at once but I can
understand there might be budgetary constraints. You might decide to tackle your garden in
stages, as time and budget allow. Older houses with established gardens might just need a
spot here and there being revamped. Please ring or write and we can get talk about what
can be achieved in your garden.

Will we get our money back invested in our garden?
Yes! Your garden is an important part of your house. A good looking garden creates a positive
first impression for home buyers and will certainly create interest in your property enabling you
to sell quickly. That in itself is a significant advantage and solves half of the buying/selling
equation.
So how much is a garden worth? (I'm assuming that 'garden' refers to all structures and work
outside of the house.) Real estates estimate that a good garden can add 10 to 15 % of the
value of a property. Knowing this, if you spend up to 10-15 % you are not going
to overcapitalise. And
with property prices increasing at an average of 10% pa , and no capital gains to pay on your
principal residence, there is a strong financial argument for 'doing up' your outside.
One definition of a cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of
nothing. The real value of an attractive garden is the view and pleasure you get from it and
not the dollars it might achieve in years to come.

When should I get my garden done?
The garden is usually the last thing on people's minds. It should be the first! Unlike anything else
you spend money on, except children of course, your garden just gets better. New cars,
kitchens and carpets will soon be showing signs of wear. However, in your garden, the plants
will be growing and maturing. Paths, ornaments and walls will be acquiring that patina of age
that is really attractive and will be seamlessly blending into the whole garden effect.
If you are building from new then thinking about the garden from the planning stage is most
important. Your house should be designed with the outside in mind, the garden shouldn't be
something that is tacked on later.
